WMSPC Update
news and information from the West Michigan Sustainable
Purchasing Consortium
23
March 2009
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
|
|
Dear WMSPC member,
Thank you for joining WMSPC. We now have over 60 members and continue to
grow.
We value and need the input of our members in order to achieve our
mission of providing access to professional procurement contracts that
support sustainable purchasing in the West Michigan community.
Accordingly, we hope you will visit the SURVEY section below. The
information you share with us about your purchasing habits helps WMSPC to
develop bid documents and award Master Services Agreements to meet
members' needs.
By using WMSPC Master Services Agreements, you add to the purchasing
power of the group and thereby reduce negative environmental impacts in
West Michigan. Please take a look at the Purchasing Power section to see
how our purchases translate into environmental terms.
Another benefit of group purchasing is that vendors see our potential and
work to provide us with the products we want. To that end, Quimby Walstrom has added a
variety of colored paper with recycled content to WMSPC's list of
discounted products.
Lastly be sure to take a look at some of the upcoming events that include
content related to purchasing. And please email plevin@delta-institute.org
to share relevant events that should be added to the next update.
Best,
Paula Levin
PURCHASING POWER -
WMSPC'S Environmental Impacts
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Between October 1, 2008 and March 13, 2009, WMSPC members purchased over
80,200 lbs. of recycled content paper.
When compared to this quantity of virgin paper (using the Neenah Paper calculator), this translates to saving:
- 103,129 lbs wood. A total of 357 trees
that supply enough oxygen for 179 people annually
- 130,404 gallons of water. Enough water to take 7,582
eight-minute showers.
- 248min BTUs energy. Enough energy to power
an average American household for 999 days.
- 31,417 lbs emissions. Carbon sequestered by 377
tree seedlings grown for 10 years.
- 16,746 lbs solid waste. A total of 578
thirty-two gallon garbage cans of waste.
